BS7211 Cables

BS7211 Cables

What is BS7211?
BS7211 is a British Standard, the latest edition of which was published in 1998. It specifies the requirements for thermosetting insulated, non-armoured cables with voltage ratings of up to 450/750V. The cables that comply with BS7211 are for electric power, lighting and internal wiring and produce low levels of smoke and corrosive products when affected by fire. The types of cables covered by this BS7211 standard include thermosetting insulated, non-sheathed, single core cables (300/500V and 450/750V); thermosetting insulated, single core sheathed cable (450/750V); thermosetting insulated, twin, 3-core, 4-core and 5-core circular sheathed cables (450/750V) and thermosetting insulated, single core, flat twin and flat 3-core sheathed cable with a circuit protective conductor (300/500V).

Which cables meet the requirements of BS7211?
The following electrical cables comply with the BS7211 specification:

2491B/6701B Cable

2491B / 6701B Cable to BS7211
2491B / 6701B Cables are flexible BS7211 cables used in pipes or ducts and the internal wiring of appliances, with a maximum operating temperature of 90°C. They have class 5 plain copper conductors and low smoke zero halogen or LS0H insulation, which is produced in a whole range of different colours – Black, Blue, Green/Yellow, Red, Yellow, White, Violet, Brown, Grey, Orange and Pink. The harmonised code for 2491B / 6701B is H05Z-K / H07Z-K.

624-B Cable

624-B LS0H Twin and Earth Cable to BS7211
624-B Twin and Earth Cable is a domestic wiring BS7211 cable used for the surface wiring of sockets and lighting. 624-B Cable has plain copper conductors (class 1 solid for cables from 1.5 to 2.5 mm², class 2 stranded for cables from 6 to 10mm² and class 2 stranded compacted for cables up to 16mm²), a circuit protection conductor or earth (class 1 solid plain copper conductor for 1 to 6mm² and class 2 stranded plain copper for 10 and 16mm²), XLPE insulation and a white low smoke zero halogen (LS0H) sheath.

6491B Cable

6491B Conduit Wiring Cable to BS7211
This BS7211 6491B Cable is recommended for use in conduits and fixed, protected installations. The conduit wiring cable has class 2 stranded plain copper conductors and LS0H insulation, which is produced in a number of colours – Black, Blue, Green/Yellow, Red, Yellow, White, Violet, Brown, Grey, Orange and Pink. The harmonised code for this BS7211 Cable is H07Z-R.

Why do we use low smoke zero halogen BS7211 cables?
Low Smoke Zero Halogen (LS0H) BS7211 cables are designed for projects in public buildings. When exposed to fire, the LS0H sheath or insulation on these BS7211 cables emits very low levels of smoke and non-toxic levels of halogen gas (typically under 0.5% HCl emission).

What if I need a similar PVC-insulated cable?
For projects where LS0H BS7211 cables are not specified, BS6004 cables can be supplied. The BS6004 standard covers electric power, lighting and internal wiring cables that are PVC-insulated and non-armoured, with voltage ratings up to 450/750V. BS6004 cables include 6381Y Cable, 2491X Cable, 6181Y Cable and 6491X Cable. More information on BS6004 cables.

Which industries use BS7211 cables?

It’s not just the building and construction industry that installs BS7211 cables. You’ll find BS7211-specified cables in everything from the rail and transport sector and the automation and process control industry to transmission, distribution and power networks.
